Build Attic Wall Shelves

I followed this tutorial by ana white which is an easy and cost effective way to make basic wood shelving for an attic basement or garage.

Start choosing the best place for your shelves. Using 10d nails nail the boards vertically to the rafters in such a way that one board end be on the floor and the. Storage space in attics is usually limited to the small floored area. These will support your shelves.

I first screwed the back support boards for each shelf into the studs. Install the entire wall of the window with built in shelves and beneath the window make a built in storage bench that can act as a window seat or a reading nook. After that mark on the vertical boards the distance you ve planned out between the shelves. Sure you can buy a shelf similar to this one at a discount store but you won t be able to choose the size or finish.

Fill the shelves with books and you will get a home library where you can sit and enjoy books. Fit the miter on one end then mark the opposite end for cutting. Cut 1x1 pieces to fit across two for each shelf on the unit and screw them into place using the marks you made. Cut the perpendicular boards to form the sides of the storage units.
